THE CHALLENGE
The homeowners originally envisioned a narrow natural staircase with minimal retaining.
But with the steep grade, we were concerned that runoff would carry soil, mulch, and debris straight into their driveway, creating ongoing maintenance and drainage issues.
OUR APPROACH
We built a tiered stairway to stabilize the slope and prevent runoff into the driveway.
Each tier includes plantings—Frans Fontaine hornbeams, a serviceberry, and Panicum ‘Heavy Metal’—to soften the structure and add seasonal interest.
THE RESULTS
The finished design not only protects the driveway from runoff but also transforms a once-tricky slope into a layered landscape that feels both modern and inviting.
The plantings bring year-round appeal, and the tiered design creates a graceful flow up to the home.
